Introduction

Arthur Saunders William Charles Gore, 5th Earl of Arran, was born on 6 January 1839. He died on 14 March 1901. He was known as Viscount Sudley from 1839, the year of his birth, until 1884, when he succeeded to the earldom. He was an Anglo-Irish peer and diplomat.

Early Life:

Arran was the eldest son of Philip Yorke Gore, the 4th Earl of Arran, and Elizabeth Marianne Napier. His maternal grandfather was General Sir William Francis Patrick Napier. His mother's lineage included descent from the 2nd Duke of Richmond, who was a grandson of King Charles II of England. Arran received education at Eton College and subsequently entered the diplomatic service.

Diplomatic and Public Career:

In 1863, Arran was appointed High Sheriff of Donegal. He held diplomatic positions as an Attaché at the British embassies in Hanover, Stuttgart, Lisbon, and Paris. Between 1865 and 1881, he served as a Special Commissioner for Income Tax, and from 1883 to 1884, he was a Commissioner of Customs.

In 1884, he inherited the titles from his father, becoming the 5th Earl of Arran. Since the earldom was an Irish peerage, it did not automatically grant him a seat in the House of Lords. Later that year, he was granted the title of Baron Sudley, of Castle Gore in County Mayo, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. This peerage provided him with an automatic seat in the House of Lords.

He served as Lord Lieutenant of County Mayo from 1889 until his death in 1901. In 1898, he was invested as a Knight of the Order of St Patrick.

Family:

In 1865, Arran married the Honourable Edith Elizabeth Henrietta Jocelyn, daughter of Robert Jocelyn, Viscount Jocelyn. They had one son and three daughters before her early death in 1871. Their children included:

- Lady Mabell Frances Elizabeth Gore (1866–1956): married David Ogilvy, 11th Earl of Airlie, on 19 January 1886, and had children.

- Lady Cicely Alice Gore (1867–1955): married James Gascoyne-Cecil, 4th Marquess of Salisbury, on 17 May 1887, and had children.

- Arthur Gore, 6th Earl of Arran (1868–1958): married Mathilde van Kattendijke on 16 August 1902, with whom he had children; he remarried Lilian Quick on 17 December 1929.

- Lady Esther Georgiana Caroline Gore (1870–1955): married Frederick Smith, 2nd Viscount Hambleden, on 26 July 1894, and had children.

After the death of his first wife, Arran remarried in 1889 to Winifred Ellen Reilly, daughter of John Reilly and widow of Hon. John Montagu Stopford. She was a lady-in-waiting to Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein. They had one daughter:

- Lady Winifred Helene Lettice Gore (1891–1958).

Arthur Gore, 5th Earl of Arran, died at his residence in Mayfair on 14 March 1901, aged 62. He was succeeded by his son Arthur, the 6th Earl. Lady Arran died in 1921.
