Li Yunjing

Li Yunjing was born in 1898 in Chaozhou City, Chao'an District, Guangdong Province, and was of Han ethnicity. He was the father of Hong Kong's renowned billionaire Li Ka-shing.

From a young age, Li Yunjing was intelligent, eager to learn, and diligent. In 1920, he gained admission to Shengli Jinshan Middle School with excellent grades, and upon graduating in 1917, he earned the honor of being the top student in the school. Due to financial difficulties at home, he was unable to continue his studies. He was employed at Lianyang Maode School, where he began his career as a teacher.

A few years later, Li Yunjing abandoned teaching to venture overseas for business. He worked as a shop assistant at Yihe Company, founded by Teochew merchants, in Sembarang, Java. Due to turbulent circumstances at the time, he returned to China and served as treasurer and cashier at Heng'an Silver Bank in Chao'an City. However, with the changing situation, the bank closed, and he turned back to education.

After returning to China, Li Yunjing taught at a school in Longdu Hougou and gained a good reputation for his excellent teaching results. In the spring of 1935, he was appointed principal of Hong'an Primary School. Two years later, in 1937, he was transferred to be principal of Guolong Primary School in Anbu, where he served until Chaozhou fell to the Japanese. Afterwards, his entire family moved to Hong Kong.

In Hong Kong, Li Yunjing continued his work in education until his death from illness in the winter of 1943.

His life story reflects his varied experiences across education and business fields. His family background has garnered attention due to his being the father of the renowned entrepreneur Li Ka-shing.
