Introduction

Michael Langhorne Astor was born on 10 April 1916. He was the son of Waldorf Astor, 2nd Viscount Astor, and Nancy Witcher Langhorne. Both parents served as Members of Parliament. Astor attended St. Michael's preparatory school in Uckfield, where he was a contemporary of Denton Welch. He later attended Eton College and achieved the rank of captain. His military service included roles in the Royal Artillery (Territorial Army) during World War II, where he served as an officer in the "Phantom" GHQ Liaison Regiment.

In the 1945 general election, Astor was elected as a Conservative Member of Parliament for Surrey East. He retained his parliamentary seat in the 1950 election but did not contest the subsequent 1951 election.

He authored a memoir titled "Tribal Feeling," published in 1963, and a novel named "Brand," published in 1968.

Astor was married three times. His first marriage was to Barbara McNeill in 1942; the couple had four children before their marriage ended in 1961. His second marriage was to Pandora Clifford from 1961 to 1968. From his second marriage, he had a stepdaughter, Annabel Jones, who married William Astor, 4th Viscount Astor, his nephew. His third marriage was to Judith Innes in 1970, with whom he had a daughter named Polly in 1971. Polly West, his granddaughter, has a daughter named Martha West with actor Dominic West.

Michael Astor passed away on 28 February 1980.
