Introduction
Colonel Robert Peel Dawson (1818 – 2 September 1877) was an Irish Member of Parliament associated with Westminster. He belonged to the Dawson family of Castledawson and resided at Moyola Park in County Londonderry.
He was the son of The Rt. Hon. George Robert Dawson and Mary Peel. Mary Peel was the daughter of Sir Robert Peel, 1st Baronet, and the sister of Sir Robert Peel, 2nd Baronet, who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Dawson served as an officer in the 11th Hussars. In 1850, he was appointed High Sheriff of County Londonderry. He was elected as Member of Parliament for County Londonderry, holding the office from 1859 to 1874.
In 1871, Dawson was appointed Honorary Colonel of the Londonderry Militia. His family ties included his daughter, Mary Dawson, who married Lord Adolphus John Spencer Churchill Chichester, the younger son of Lord Donegall.
His descendants included Robert Chichester, who served as MP for South Londonderry, and his great-great-grandsons, Lord Moyola — who was Prime Minister of Northern Ireland — and Robin Chichester-Clark, who was also an MP for Londonderry.
