Introduction
Kenje, whose Manchu name is 恳哲 (Kenje), and whose Chinese characters are written as 恳哲, is documented in sources such as "Selected Historical Materials Before the Conquest of Qing" and "Draft History of Qing," Volume 214. She was a clan daughter raised by the Khan of Hada Guo, belonging to the Nara clan, and later became Nurhaci's stepmother. According to records, after Taqishi's primary wife, Emu Qi Xitala (Emu of the Xitala clan), passed away, Kenje became Taqishi's secondary wife. The "Draft History of Qing" notes that Nala Shi (a clan name) held a hostile attitude towards the primary wife’s son, Shule Beile (later Qing Taizu Nurhaci), and was described as being harsh towards Nurhaci. As a result, Nurhaci and his family’s arrangements during his growth period were affected. Historical records also state that Nurhaci was forced to establish his own household at the age of nineteen, with limited inheritance. The marriage between Kenje and Taqishi made her one of Nurhaci’s stepmothers. Additionally, it is recorded that Nala Shi gave birth to a son named Ba Yala, nicknamed "Zhao Li Tu." The exact birth and death dates of Kenje are not clearly documented. Most of this information comes from "Draft History of Qing" Volume 214 and Zhao Erxun’s compilation of the "Draft History of Qing," which also includes related entries in the Biographies of the First Case.
