Introduction
Robert John Lascelles Boyle, born on 8 November 1864 and deceased on 13 October 1934, held the titles of the 11th Earl of Cork and the 11th Earl of Orrery, both within the peerage of the United Kingdom. Prior to inheriting these titles in 1925, he was known as Honorable Robert Boyle.
Boyle was the second son of Richard Boyle, the 9th Earl of Cork, and Lady Emily de Burgh. His early education was conducted at Charterhouse School, a notable boarding school in England.
In his military career, Boyle received a commission as a lieutenant in the 4th (2nd Somerset Militia) Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry on 15 April 1882. He resigned from this military position on 12 February 1887. Subsequently, beginning in 1888, he served as an honorary attaché in Madrid, a diplomatic role without formal diplomatic rank.
He entered into marriage with Josephine Catherine Hale on 30 April 1890. She was the daughter of a merchant from California. The marriage did not produce any children and she died on 2 April 1953.
During the First World War, Boyle was involved with aid efforts for Belgian soldiers. He served as the honorary secretary of the British Club for Belgian Soldiers, an organization dedicated to providing recreation and refreshment for Belgian soldiers on furlough from the front lines. In recognition of his services, he was awarded the Belgian Order of the Crown as an officer. Additionally, for his wartime contributions, he was appointed a knight of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus.
In 1925, Boyle succeeded his elder brother, Charles, to become the Earl of Cork and Orrery. He held these titles until his death in 1934. Upon his death, he was succeeded by his second cousin, William Boyle.
