Introduction

Dame Ann Parker Bowles (née de Trafford; 14 July 1918 – 22 January 1987) was a British aristocrat known for her involvement in the Girl Guides movement and her service to the Commonwealth. She was born in London at 29 Portland Place as the eldest daughter of Sir Humphrey de Trafford, 4th Baronet, a millionaire racehorse owner, and the Hon. Cynthia Hilda Evelyn Cadogan, daughter of Henry Cadogan, Viscount Chelsea. The de Trafford family lineage traces back to a recusant family of lords of the manor dating to before the Norman Conquest, with the family being restored to their hereditary baronetcy in the 19th century. Ann de Trafford was raised in the Catholic faith, following the religious traditions of her family.

In her public service, Ann Parker Bowles was a Commissioner for the Commonwealth Girl Guides Association. Her contributions to community service and to the Commonwealth were recognized through her receiving national honors. In 1972, she was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), and in 1977, she was elevated to Dame Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (DCVO).

On 14 February 1939, she married Derek Henry Parker Bowles, son of Eustace Parker Bowles and Wilma Mary Garnault Bowles. Wilma was the only daughter of Sir Henry Ferryman Bowles, 1st Baronet. The marriage produced four children:

- Brigadier Andrew Henry Parker Bowles (born 27 December 1939)

- Simon Humphrey Parker Bowles (born 6 November 1941)

- Mary Ann Parker Bowles (born 9 June 1945)

- Richard Eustace Parker Bowles (born 7 November 1947; deceased 29 November 2010)

Her eldest son, Andrew Parker Bowles, was married to Queen Camilla of the United Kingdom.
