His father was Zhu Shan, grandson of Zhu Yuanzhang (the Hongwu Emperor). On the 18th day of the second month of the first year of Yongle (1403), he was granted the title of Yongxing King, with his fief in Gongchang Prefecture. His elder brother Zhu Shangbing requested to remain in Xi'an to strengthen their brotherly ties. Zhu Shanglie died on February 22, 1417, at the age of 34, after reigning for fifteen years; his son Zhu Zhiwo succeeded him as king. His posthumous title is Yijian.
