Introduction

Thomas Lister, 2nd Baron Ribblesdale (23 January 1790 – 10 December 1832), was an English peer. He was the son of Thomas Lister and Rebecca Feilding. His father was created Baron Ribblesdale in 1797.

Lister was born in 1790 and attended Westminster School from 1800 to 1804. He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, on 2 November 1807.

He succeeded to the barony on 22 September 1826 upon the death of his father. His primary residence was Gisburne Park, the family estate.

In the House of Lords, Lister supported Conservative principles. In October 1831, he voted against the Reform Bill. This vote contributed to a series of riots across England. During these disturbances, Lister summoned troops from Burnley barracks and armed his tenants to defend Gisburne Park estate. In April 1832, he was one of ten peers who had previously voted against the bill but abstained from voting in the subsequent division.

In February 1826, Lister married Adelaide, his second cousin and the daughter of Thomas Lister of Armitage Park, Staffordshire. They had four children, with the last born after his death. Their children were:

- Hon. Thomas (1828–1876)

- Hon. Adelaide (14 May 1827 – 27 April 1911), married Maurice Drummond in 1847

- Hon. Isabel Mary (16 October 1830 – 27 July 1918), married Rev. Canon William Parsons Warburton in 1853

- Hon. Elizabeth Teresa (3 May 1833 – 20 December 1908), married Sir William Henry Melvill in 1862

Lister died unexpectedly in December 1832 at Leamington due to a ruptured blood vessel. His son, Thomas, aged four, succeeded him as the 3rd Baron Ribblesdale, becoming the youngest peer of the realm at the time. Adelaide remarried Lord John Russell, who later became Earl Russell, in 1835. She died in 1838.
