Introduction

Charlotte FitzRoy, Countess of Euston (née Lady Charlotte Maria Waldegrave), was born on October 11, 1761, and died on February 1, 1808. She was the daughter of James Waldegrave, 2nd Earl Waldegrave, and his wife, Maria Walpole. Maria Walpole was the granddaughter of Robert Walpole, the first Prime Minister of Great Britain, and later became Duchess of Gloucester and Edinburgh through her marriage to Prince William Henry, a grandson of King George II. In 1766, Prince William Henry secretly married Maria Walpole, becoming stepfather to Charlotte and her sisters.

Charlotte's elder sister was Elizabeth Waldegrave, who became Countess Waldegrave; Elizabeth's children inherited the earldom. Her younger sister, Horatia Waldegrave, married Lord Hugh Seymour.

On November 16, 1784, Charlotte married George FitzRoy, who was then styled Earl of Euston. The marriage took place at Navestock, Essex. Her husband later became the 4th Duke of Grafton, but he inherited the dukedom in 1811, after Charlotte's death, so she was known as the Countess of Euston during her lifetime.

Charlotte and George FitzRoy had several children:

- Lady Maria Anne FitzRoy (1785–1855), married Sir William Oglander, 6th Baronet, and had children.

- Lady Elizabeth Anne FitzRoy (1788–1867), married her first cousin John Henry Smyth; her mother was Lady Georgiana FitzRoy, the duke's sister.

- Henry FitzRoy, 5th Duke of Grafton (1790–1863), married Mary Caroline Berkeley, daughter of Admiral Sir George Cranfield Berkeley, and had children.

- The Rt. Hon. Lt.-Col. Lord Charles FitzRoy (1791–1865), married Lady Anne Cavendish, daughter of George Cavendish, 1st Earl of Burlington, and had children.

- Lady Isabella Frances FitzRoy (1792–1875), married The Hon. Henry Joseph St. John; they had children.

Several of her children died in infancy or childhood:

- The Hon. William FitzRoy (1794–1804)

- The Hon. FitzRoy (1795–1797)

- The Hon. Richard FitzRoy (1798–1798)

- The Hon. Richard FitzRoy (1800–1801)

- Lord James FitzRoy (1804–1834)

Her portrait was painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds and John Hoppner. Charlotte FitzRoy died at her residence in Lower Brook Street, London, at the age of 45 from what was described as "a liver complaint and bilious fever." She was buried in the family vault. Her obituary characterized her as "an example of everything amicable in woman."
