Introduction

Lieutenant General The Honourable Sir James Charlemagne Dormer (26 January 1834 – 3 May 1893) was a British Army officer. He was the younger son of Joseph Thaddeus Dormer, 11th Baron Dormer.

Dormer's military career included several key appointments. In 1882, he served as Chief of Staff of the British Army of occupation in Egypt. In 1885, he was appointed Deputy Adjutant-General for auxiliary forces. The following year, in 1886, he became the General Officer Commander commanding Dublin District. In 1888, he took command of the British Troops in Egypt. In 1891, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Madras Army and also served as a Member of the Council of the Governor of Fort St George.

He died on 3 May 1893 due to injuries sustained after being mauled by a tiger during a hunt on 25 April 1893 in the Nilgiris. Following his death, General Mansfield Clarke succeeded him as commander-in-chief of the Madras Army.

His family included his eldest son, Roland Dormer, who succeeded his uncle as Baron Dormer.
