Introduction
Lionel Tollemache, 5th Earl of Dysart, was born on 6 August 1734. He was styled Lord Huntingtower until 1770, when he inherited the earldom. His father was the previous Earl of Dysart, and Lionel had no settlement from his father at the age of majority. As a result, he married without his father's knowledge or consent.
On 2 October 1760, Lionel Tollemache married Charlotte Walpole at St James's Church, Piccadilly. Charlotte was the daughter of Sir Edward Walpole. Horace Walpole, Charlotte's uncle, described Lord Huntingtower as "a very handsome person."
Lionel Tollemache succeeded to the title of Earl of Dysart approximately ten years after his marriage, in 1770. His wife, Charlotte, suffered from a long and painful illness and died at Ham House on 5 September 1789.
Following Charlotte's death, Lionel Tollemache remarried on 19 April 1791. His second wife was Magdalene Lewis, who was the sister of Wilbraham Lewis, Lionel's brother's wife. Lionel Tollemache and Magdalene Lewis did not have children.
Lionel Tollemache, 5th Earl of Dysart, died at Ham House on 20 February 1799. Upon his death, the title was succeeded by his brother, Wilbraham Tollemache. All available information indicates that Lionel did not have any offspring by either of his wives.
