Introduction
Edoardo Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi was born on 19 November 1983 at the Portland Hospital in the West End of London. He is the son of Alessandro "Alex" Mapelli Mozzi, a British Olympian and member of a historically noble Italian family, whose ancestral seat is Villa Mapelli Mozzi in the province of Bergamo, Italy. The family holds the hereditary title of count, awarded in 1913 by King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy; while noble titles are not officially recognized in the Italian Republic, the title of count may still be used as a courtesy.
Mapelli Mozzi's mother is Nicola "Nikki" Diana Williams-Ellis, who is the granddaughter of Sir Robert Abraham Burrows, a businessman and Liberal party politician. Nicola has been married three times, with her third marriage occurring in 2017 to sculptor David Williams-Ellis. His familial relations include an older sister, Natalia Alice Yeomans, born in 1981, and a younger half-brother, Albemarle "Alby" Shale, born in 1991.
He was educated at the Dragon School in Oxford and Radley College in Oxfordshire. He earned a Master of Arts degree in Politics from the University of Edinburgh.
At age 23, with support from his family, Mapelli Mozzi founded Banda, a property development and interior design company. The company claims to focus on developing homes in "undervalued" parts of London; however, this characterization has been contested by property experts, who note that districts such as Notting Hill, where one of his projects is located, is considered a highly valuable area. He holds director positions in various companies, some with family members including his mother and brother-in-law, Tod Yeomans.
In the realm of public policy and development, Mapelli Mozzi authored an article in 2016 urging London’s future mayor to prioritize redevelopment projects in central London. He has publicly criticized politicians including Andrea Leadsom and Jeremy Corbyn.
He is a co-founder of the charity "Cricket Builds Hope," a British-Rwandan organization launched in 2011, dedicated to using cricket as a catalyst for positive social change in Rwanda. The charity was initially conceived by his stepfather Christopher Shale, a British businessman and Conservative politician, who passed away in 2001 before it could be established. The charity was instrumental in building Rwanda's first grass wicket cricket ground, known as Gahanga International Cricket Stadium. Albemarle "Alby" Shale, Mapelli Mozzi’s maternal half-brother, sits on its board of trustees. The charity counts among its patrons figures such as Jonathan Agnew, Brian Lara, Heather Knight, Ebony Rainford-Brent, Sam Billings, and Makhaya Ntini. In 2012, Mapelli Mozzi participated in the Nightrider Challenge, cycling overnight in London to raise funds for Cricket Builds Hope.
In his personal life, Mapelli Mozzi was engaged to architect Dara Huang, with whom he has a son, Christopher Woolf "Wolfie", born in 2016. In 2018, he began a relationship with Princess Beatrice of York, whom he has known since childhood, due to longstanding familial connections. Their engagement was announced on 26 September 2019 following a proposal in Italy; it is reported that Mapelli Mozzi collaborated with British jeweler Shaun Leane to design the engagement ring. The couple was initially scheduled to marry on 29 May 2020 at the Chapel Royal of St James's Palace but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They eventually married privately on 17 July 2020 at the Royal Chapel of All Saints in Windsor Great Park.
Princess Beatrice and Mapelli Mozzi have two daughters: Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi, born on 18 September 2021, who is currently tenth in the line of succession to the British throne, and Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi, born prematurely on 22 January 2025, who is eleventh in the line of succession. The family formerly resided in a four-bedroom apartment at St James's Palace but reportedly moved to a manor in the Cotswolds in late 2022.
Mapelli Mozzi has publicly disclosed that he is dyslexic. He maintains an active presence on social media platforms such as Twitter, where he has expressed views on environmental and political issues, including opposition to plastic pollution, whaling, and gun control. He has also criticized certain British politicians and supported the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton during the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
