Introduction

David Graham Drummond Ogilvy, the 10th Earl of Airlie, was born on May 4, 1826, in London. He was the second son of David Ogilvy, the 9th Earl of Airlie, and his first wife, Clementine, daughter of Gavin Drummond. Although he was styled Lord Ogilvy from birth, he became the 10th Earl of Airlie in 1849 following the death of his father, as he was the eldest surviving son.

Ogilvy received his education at Christ Church, Oxford, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1847. In 1879, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree by the University of Glasgow.

In 1847, Ogilvy was appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant for Forfarshire. He was elected as a Scottish representative peer to the House of Lords in 1850. His military service included positions as captain of the Forfarshire Yeomanry Cavalry and the 12th Forfarshire Rifle Volunteers starting in 1856. He was invested as a Knight of the Order of the Thistle in 1862.

Ogilvy served as the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland from 1872 to 1873. Additionally, he played a role in education as a founder and the first President of the Girls' Public Day School Company.

On September 23, 1851, Ogilvy married Hon. (Henrietta) Blanche Stanley, born on July 30, 1830, and died on January 5, 1921. The marriage took place at Alderley, Cheshire. Blanche was the second daughter of Edward Stanley, 2nd Baron Stanley of Alderley, and Henrietta Dillon-Lee. The couple had two sons and four daughters.

Their children included:

- Lady (Henrietta) Blanche Ogilvy (1852–1925), who married Colonel Sir Henry Montague Hozier; their daughter, Clementine Ogilvy Hozier, was the wife of Winston Churchill.

- Lady Clementine Gertrude Helen Ogilvy (1854–1932), who married Bertram Mitford, later Baron Redesdale; their descendants include the Mitford sisters.

- Lieutenant-Colonel David Stanley William Ogilvy, the 11th Earl of Airlie (1856–1900), who was killed in action during the Second Boer War; he married Lady Mabell Gore and had descendants, including Sir Angus Ogilvy, who married Princess Alexandra of Kent.

- Lady Maude Josepha Ogilvy (1859–1933), married Theodore Whyte.

- Lyulph Gilchrist Stanley Ogilvy (1861–1947), married Edith Boothroyd in Colorado, USA.

- Lady Griselda Johanna Helen Ogilvy (1865–1934), married James Cheape.

David Ogilvy, 10th Earl of Airlie, died on September 25, 1881, in Denver, Colorado. He was succeeded in his titles by his eldest son, David.
