Introduction

George Wilbraham, FRS (8 March 1779 – 24 January 1852), was an English politician associated with the Whig party. He was born in Delamere, Cheshire, and was the eldest surviving son of George Wilbraham, who was also a Member of Parliament (MP) and resided at Delamere Lodge. Prior to residing there, his family had connections to Nantwich, Cheshire.

Wilbraham received his early education at Rugby School and later attended Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1813, he succeeded his father to the family estate at Delamere Lodge.

His parliamentary career included representing multiple constituencies. He was elected MP for Stockbridge in 1826. Subsequently, he served as MP for Cheshire beginning in 1831, and following the creation of the Cheshire South constituency in 1832, he was elected to represent that district as well.

In addition to his parliamentary service, Wilbraham held the position of High Sheriff of Cheshire for the term 1844–1845.

He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1821. Wilbraham married Lady Anne Fortescue, the daughter of Hugh Fortescue, 1st Earl Fortescue. The couple had five sons.

George Wilbraham passed away in 1852. His eldest son, George Fortescue Wilbraham, succeeded him.
