Introduction

Consort Tuanjiayushi, also known as Hahana Jacing (Manchu: ᡥᠠᡥᠨ᠊ᠠᠵᠠᠴᡳᠩ, transliterated by Mulinde as Hahana Jacing), was born in 1560. She was a member of the Manchu Plain Red Banner. Her father was Tabemba Yan, her grandfather was Dodo Bakeshu, and her great-grandfather was Liu Shen Ne. Her ancestors included Bahutek Shen. In 1577, at the age of only eighteen, she married Nurhaci.

On the night of the 22nd day of the 12th lunar month in 1578, she gave birth to Nurhaci's eldest daughter, Nenzhe, who was later known as Dongguo Gege; in 1580, she bore her eldest son, Chuying; and in 1583, she gave birth to her second son, Daishan, who was later granted the title of Lijiang Prince.

Nurhaci was a son-in-law of the Tuanjiayushi. After her death in the 20th year of Wanli (1592), her surname was changed back to Aisin Gioro from Tuanjiayushi. Later generations, influenced by Han customs, tended to avoid mentioning the fact that the founding emperor entered into a levirate marriage. In the eleventh year of the Tianming era (1626), Hong Taiji ascended the throne as emperor. To elevate the status of his birth mother, Meng Guzhege, Hong Taiji posthumously honored her as empress, but his primary consort, Tuanjiayushi, and another principal wife, Fucha, were not posthumously honored as empresses. Such records can be found in the “Draft History of Qing” (Qing Shi Gao, Vol. 214) and in the version compiled by Zhao Erxun and others.
