Introduction
Eiji Takahashi (born August 30, 1975) is a Japanese politician and a member of the House of Representatives (1st term) affiliated with the Constitutional Democratic Party. He hails from Shibuya Ward, Tokyo. His grandfather was Morihiro Miki, the 66th Prime Minister of Japan; his mother is Kiyoko Takahashi, a former member of the House of Councillors and daughter of Miki; and his father is Wataru Takahashi, a physician and former secretary to the Prime Minister.
He graduated from Aoyama Gakuin High School and the Department of Biology at Kobe University. After graduation, he worked for Hakuhodo Inc.
In the 2024 general election for the 50th House of Representatives, he indicated his intention to run in the Tokushima 1st District. Initially, he considered running as a candidate from the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), balancing the possibility of succeeding the previous incumbent, Masami Goto, who was elected as governor of Tokushima Prefecture, and seeking the party's support for the party branch. However, a candidate from the LDP, Hirofumi Niki, was selected by the local branch committee, leading to a deadlock in candidate selection.
Subsequently, with the support of the Constitutional Democratic Party’s Tokushima Prefectural Federation, Takahashi became the head of the party’s Tokushima 1st District branch. When he announced his candidacy, he referencing the LDP’s political fundraising party income omission scandal, stating, "If Miki were alive, the current situation would be intolerable." He expressed his commitment to “clean” political reforms modeled after his grandfather Miki and aimed for a regime change in the next election.
Following the dissolution of the House of Representatives later that year, he ran in the October 27th election as a Constitutional Democratic Party candidate for Tokushima 1st District. Although he was defeated by the incumbent Niki Hirofumi, who was backed by the Liberal Democratic Party, the party secured one proportional representation seat from the Shikoku block. Among candidates ranked first on the party list, Takahashi had the highest defeat rate (64.22%) but was ultimately elected.
According to asset disclosure reports published on April 7, 2025, Takahashi’s most significant assets were real estate in Meguro Ward, Tokyo, valued at 53.41 million yen (standard assessed value for fixed assets), and land, buildings, and securities in Awa City, Tokushima Prefecture, totaling 77.09 million yen.
