Introduction
Tadatake Shimazu was a samurai of Satsuma Domain during the late Edo period and the 10th head of the Imazu Shimazu family. His year of birth is unknown, but he is believed to have been active mainly from the 1830s to the 1860s. He was the seventh son of Zaiyū Shimazu and his mother was Chōhi (daughter of Arata Tokuaki). Notably, he was the biological father of Tenshōin (Atsuhime).
Regarding his clan and family lineage, he was initially raised as an adopted son of Hijikata Hisakata of the Hanaoka family. He returned to Kagoshima in the 11th year of Bunka (1814). Later, in the 8th year of Bunsei (1825), he became the adopted son of Tadayoshi Shimazu of the Imazu family, and succeeded to the family headship in the 10th year of Tenpō (1839).
During his rule, he undertook financial reforms supported by Hirogoji Koshō, achieving notable results. He promoted household management reforms and inherited the family headship within his lineage.
His primary wife was Oyuki, daughter of Hisakata Shimazu, and they had multiple children together.
