Introduction
William Russell, 8th Duke of Bedford, was born on 1 July 1809 and died on 27 May 1872. He was styled Marquess of Tavistock from 1839 until 1861. He was a British politician affiliated with the Whig party.
He was the son of Francis Russell, 7th Duke of Bedford, and Anna Maria Stanhope. Russell received his education at Eton College and subsequently attended Christ Church, Oxford.
Russell served as a Member of Parliament for Tavistock from 1832 to 1841. The parliamentary constituency of Tavistock had been represented by members of the Russell family intermittently since the year 1640.
In 1861, upon the death of his father, Russell inherited the titles of Duke of Bedford. He remained unmarried and had no children. William Russell died at the age of 62 and was interred in the Bedford Chapel at St. Michael's Church in Chenies, Buckinghamshire.
Following his death, his titles were inherited by his cousin, Francis Hastings Russell, who became the 9th Duke of Bedford.
