Introduction

Sir Charles Cope, 2nd Baronet (circa 1743 – 14 June 1781), was a member of the British aristocracy. He was the eldest son of Jonathan Cope and Arabella Howard. His paternal grandfather was Sir Jonathan Cope, 1st Baronet. His father was baptized on 27 October 1717 at Sarsden, Oxfordshire, and died on 2 November 1763.

His mother, Arabella Howard, was the daughter of Henry Howard, 4th Earl of Carlisle. In April 1765, Sir Charles Cope succeeded to his grandfather's baronetcy. He served as Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire during the years 1773 to 1774.

In 1767, Cope married Catherine Bishopp, the fifth and youngest daughter of Sir Cecil Bishopp, 6th Baronet, and Anne Boscawen. Catherine Bishopp was born on 30 November 1744. After Sir Charles Cope's death, she married Charles Jenkinson, 1st Earl of Liverpool, as his second wife, on 22 June 1782 at her residence in Hertford Street, London. She lived until 1 October 1827, passing away aged 82 in the same house, and was buried on 10 October 1827 at Buxted, Sussex.

Sir Charles Cope died on 14 June 1781 and was buried four days later at Hanwell, Oxfordshire. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Charles Cope, who was a student at Eton College. The second Baronet's third son died aged 11 on 25 December 1781 and was also buried at Hanwell.

The baronetcy was inherited by Sir Charles Cope's half-brother, Jonathan Cope. The estates were divided, with his two daughters, Arabella Diana and Charlotte Anne, inheriting the family properties. Arabella Diana married John Sackville, 3rd Duke of Dorset, and Charlotte Anne married George Gordon, 5th Earl of Aboyne. After her husband's death, Charlotte Anne became the 9th Marquess of Huntly.

This summary reflects the known factual details of Sir Charles Cope’s lineage, marriage, and death, as well as the subsequent inheritance history related to his family.
