Introduction

John Selwyn Calverley (also spelled Selwin) was born on 4 July 1855 in Leeds, United Kingdom. He was a member of the Calverley family of Oulton Hall. His father was Edmund Calverley, and his mother, Isabella, was the daughter of Sir John Thomas Selwyn, the 6th Baronet Selwyn (or Selwin). Isabella was also the sister of Henry Selwin-Ibbetson, 1st Baron Rookwood, a British Conservative politician.

Calverley's athletic career includes participation in the 1900 Summer Olympics held in Le Havre, France. During these Olympic Games, he competed in sailing and secured a silver medal in the 20+ ton class.

In 1888, Calverley married Sybil Disraeli, a niece of the British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. The couple had two daughters: Sybil Horatia Calverley, born in 1889 and who lived until 1971, and Frances Mary Calverley, born in 1896 and who lived until 1970.
