Zhang Qi is the only son of Zhang Chunqiao and his wife Wen Jing, born in 1959 in Shanghai.
As a young man, he was admitted to Changchun University. After graduation, he worked in Changchun, serving as deputy head of the Propaganda Group of the Changchun Revolutionary Committee.
