Introduction
Empress Hang (Chinese: 肅孝皇后; died 1456) was a Chinese empress consort of the Ming dynasty, known primarily for her marriage to the Jingtai Emperor. Her origins trace back to her status as a concubine of the emperor before her elevation to empress.
During the reign of the Xuande Emperor (1425–1435), she was referred to as Lady Hang (杭氏). In 1449, following the capture of Jingtai's elder brother by the Mongols, Lady Hang was promoted to the position of consort (杭妃). At that time, Jingtai lacked a son with his primary wife and empress.
In May 1452, the emperor's son with Lady Hang was officially declared heir to the throne, marking her elevation to empress. She was granted the title of Empress (皇后) on 22 September 1452. Later, in 1456, she received the posthumous title Empress Suxiao (肅孝皇后).
Her sole known issue was Zhu Jianji, Crown Prince Huaixian (懷獻皇太子 朱見濟), born on 28 March 1445 and died on 21 March 1453. He was the first son of the Jingtai Emperor and Lady Hang.
Empress Hang died in 1456, the year prior to the deposition of her husband, the Jingtai Emperor.
