Introduction

George Hamilton-Gordon, 6th Earl of Aberdeen, was born on December 10, 1841. He held the courtesy title of Lord Haddo from 1860 until 1864. He was a Scottish peer and engaged in maritime activities.

He resided for a time in Richmond, Maine, where he worked in various capacities, including cutting ice and clerking in a store. There is a record of an incident in which he lost his temper after being fired from his store position, during which he reportedly told his employer that he "could buy and sell him many times over" before leaving in anger.

In his maritime pursuits, Lord Aberdeen frequently shipped out of Richmond, Maine, and at one point served as the captain of a small vessel named Walton or Waltham. He maintained correspondence with his family, including letters to his mother and brother, which provide evidence of his involvement in sailing activities.

In 1870, Lord Aberdeen traveled from Boston to Melbourne aboard the vessel Hera. During a violent storm, he was washed overboard and drowned. It was reported that he was attempting to take down the boom sail at the time and could have delegated this task to another crew member. His death was confirmed as accidental.

His family experienced tragedy prior to his death, with his younger brother having been killed in a rifle accident two years earlier. Upon his death, he was succeeded by his next younger brother, John Hamilton-Gordon. John later became the Governor-General of Canada from 1893 to 1898 and served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1896 and from 1905 to 1915.

The 6th Earl of Aberdeen's heraldic arms and other official records are documented but are not described in detail here. Additional historical records include contributions to Parliament by George Hamilton-Gordon, which are recorded in the Hansard archives covering the years 1803 to 2005.
