Introduction

Sir William Oglander, 6th Baronet (13 September 1769 – 17 January 1852), was an English nobleman associated with Nunwell, located in Brading on the Isle of Wight. His lifetime encompassed the late 18th and early 19th centuries, during which he held a parliamentary seat and served as High Sheriff of Dorset.

Born at Parnham, near Bridport in Dorset, Sir William was the son of Sir William Oglander, 5th Baronet, and Sukey Serle, the daughter of Peter Serle of Testwood. He received his early education at Winchester College before matriculating at New College, Oxford, on 3 March 1787 at the age of 17. He was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1790.

He inherited the baronetcy from his father following his death on 5 January 1806. The title of Baronet of Nunwell remained with him until his death.

In the political arena, Sir William Oglander was elected as a Member of Parliament for Bodmin in 1807, a position he held until 1812. In addition to his parliamentary duties, he served as High Sheriff of Dorset from 1817 to 1818.

On 24 May 1810, Sir William married Maria Anne Fitzroy at St George's, Hanover Square. Maria Anne was the daughter of George FitzRoy, 4th Duke of Grafton. Around the year 1820, Sir William commissioned a portrait of Maria Anne by Sir Thomas Lawrence, likely intended to be displayed in their residence at Parnham.

Sir William Oglander died at Parnham at the age of 82. Upon his death, the baronetcy was succeeded by his son, Henry Oglander.
