Introduction

Lord Wriothesley Russell (11 May 1804 – 6 April 1886) was an Anglican priest and member of the British aristocracy. He was a member of the Russell family and held the ecclesiastical position of Canon of Windsor from 1840 until his death in 1886.

Born in 1804 in St James's, Westminster, England, he was the fourth son of John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford, and Lady Georgiana Gordon, daughter of Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon. His birth was registered in Westminster.

He received higher education at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he obtained a Master of Arts degree in 1829.

In his ecclesiastical career, Lord Wriothesley Russell served as a chaplain to Prince Albert. His appointments included the rectorship of St Michael's Church in Chenies, Buckinghamshire, in 1829, and the rectorship of Streatham in Surrey in 1830. He was appointed to the Ninth Stall as a Canon at St George's Chapel within Windsor Castle in 1840. Additionally, he acted as Deputy Clerk of the Closet to Queen Victoria starting in 1850.

He married Elizabeth Laura Henrietta Russell, his first cousin, born on 22 January 1803 and who died on 5 May 1886. Their marriage produced three children:

- Alfred John Russell, born 13 August 1833 and died 11 February 1857.

- Algernon Wriothesley Russell, born 30 August 1835 and died 19 February 1908.

- Evelyn Mary Eliza Russell, born 5 May 1837 and died 5 December 1913.

Lord Wriothesley Russell and his wife are interred in the churchyard of St Michael's Church in Chenies, alongside other members of the Russell family.
