Introduction

Lord Vere Bertie (circa 1712 – 13 September 1768) was a British politician and a member of the Bertie family, the younger son of Robert Bertie, 1st Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven. His familial lineage included notable relatives such as his elder brothers, Robert Bertie, styled Lord Willoughby, who died during his studies at the Wolfenbüttel Ritter-Akademie, and Peregrine Bertie, 2nd Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven. His paternal grandparents were Robert Bertie, 3rd Earl of Lindsey, and Elizabeth Wharton, daughter of the 4th Baron Wharton. His maternal grandparents were Major-General William Farington of Chislehurst and Theodosia Betenson, sister and co-heiress of Sir Edward Betenson, 1st Baronet.

Bertie received his education at Westminster School from 1724 to 1728. On 19 March 1728/9, he was commissioned as an ensign in the 2nd Regiment of Foot Guards, a position he held until his retirement in July 1737.

In the political sphere, Lord Vere Bertie was elected as Member of Parliament for Boston in the 1741 general election, representing his family's interest. During his time in Parliament, he aligned with the Carteret ministry initially, voting in support of the Hanoverian Army in 1742. However, he changed his stance in January 1744 by defecting from their position on the same issue. He did not participate in the division on the Hanoverian subsidies in 1746 but was re-elected in the 1747 election after a contested campaign. Post-1747, Bertie was considered to have shifted into opposition to the Pelham ministry. He served in Parliament until 1754, when he chose not to seek re-election.

Bertie married Anne Casey on 4 October 1736. Anne was the illegitimate daughter of Sir Cecil Wray, 11th Baronet. Their marriage produced four children: two sons, who died young, and two daughters, who became his heirs. His eldest daughter, Albinia Bertie (1737/8–1816), married George Hobart, 3rd Earl of Buckinghamshire, son of John Hobart, 1st Earl of Buckinghamshire, and Elizabeth Bristow. His second daughter, Anna Louisa Bertie (1747–1841), married Lieutenant-General Sir Charles Stuart, the fourth son of John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, and Mary Stuart, Countess of Bute.

Lord Vere Bertie died on 13 September 1768.
