Introduction

Consort Li Shufei was born no later than 1369 in the 14th century and died on July 1, 1398. She was a consort of Ming Taizu Zhu Yuanzhang. She was born in Huoqiu County, Shouzhou, and her father's name was Li Jie. In December of the first year of Hongwu (1368), her father Li Jie died in northern military campaigns. Her biological mother was Madam Mao (or Mao Shi). She had brothers named Li Liang and Li Zhong. The exact year of her birth and the date she entered the palace are not recorded in detail.

In the winter of October of the 17th year of Hongwu (1384), Zhu Yuanzhang conferred upon Li Shufei the title of Shufei, overseeing palace affairs. Historian Zhu Xizu estimated that Li Shufei entered the palace at around 18 years of age, possibly replacing an earlier consort in rank. Records indicate she lived in the palace, with specific details noted in the old chronicle "Jiao Palace Old Stories."

On the 16th day of the leap month in the 31st year of Hongwu (1398), Li Shufei committed suicide and was buried with her master at the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum. Memorial inscriptions from her family indicate she continued to hold influence after Zhu Yuanzhang's death, possibly related to posthumous titles and promotions for her family. There is some controversy over whether she was the mother of Zhu Biao, Zhu Yuanzhang's eldest son, but ritual records depict her being honored as Zhu Biao's birth mother.
