Introduction
George Howard, 6th Earl of Carlisle (17 September 1773 – 7 October 1848), was a British politician and nobleman. He was born on 17 September 1773 and was styled Viscount Morpeth until 1825, when he succeeded his father as the Earl of Carlisle. His place of birth was Castle Howard, Yorkshire, England.
His parents were Frederick Howard, 5th Earl of Carlisle, and Lady Margaret Caroline Leveson-Gower. His paternal grandparents were Henry Howard, 4th Earl of Carlisle, and Hon Isabella Byron, daughter of William Byron, 4th Baron Byron. His maternal grandparents were Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Marquess of Stafford, and Lady Louisa Egerton, daughter of Scroop Egerton, 1st Duke of Bridgewater. He had several siblings, including Hon William Howard, Maj. Hon Frederick Howard, the Very Rev. Hon Henry Howard (Dean of Lichfield), Lady Isabella Howard (wife of John Campbell, 1st Baron Cawdor), Lady Elizabeth Howard (wife of John Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland), and Lady Gertrude Howard (wife of William Sloane-Stanley).
George Howard was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford.
In his political career, Howard was first elected to Parliament for Morpeth in 1795 as a member of the Whig party, a seat he held until 1806. Subsequently, he represented Cumberland until 1820. He was sworn into the Privy Council in 1806 and was appointed to the Indian Board as part of the "Ministry of All the Talents," but resigned from this position in 1807.
In 1825, upon the death of his father, he inherited the earldom and entered the House of Lords. He served in the government of George Canning and Lord Goderich as First Commissioner of Woods and Forests from May to July 1827. He was appointed Lord Privy Seal in July 1827 and served until January 1828, with a seat in the cabinet. He later aligned with the Whigs, serving as Minister without Portfolio in Lord Grey's administration from 1830 to 1834, and again as Lord Privy Seal in 1834.
He held the office of Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire from 1824 to 1840. In 1837, he was appointed a Knight of the Garter.
Howard married Lady Georgiana Cavendish on 21 March 1801. She was the daughter of William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire, and Lady Georgiana Spencer. Together, they had twelve children:
- George Howard, 7th Earl of Carlisle (1802–1864)
- Lady Caroline Georgiana Howard (1803–1881)
- Lady Georgiana Howard (1804–1860)
- Hon Frederick George Howard (1805–1834)
- Lady Harriet Elizabeth Georgiana Howard (1806–1868)
- William George Howard, 8th Earl of Carlisle (1808–1889)
- Edward Granville George Howard, 1st Baron Lanerton (1809–1880)
- Lady Blanche Georgiana Howard (1812–1840)
- Hon Charles Wentworth George Howard (1814–1879)
- Lady Elizabeth Dorothy Anne Howard (1816–1891)
- Hon Henry George Howard (1818–1879)
- Lady Mary Matilda Georgiana Howard (1823–1892)
He died at Castle Howard on 7 October 1848, aged 75. His wife, Lady Georgiana Howard, died in 1858 at Castle Howard.
His eldest son, George Howard, inherited the earldom but died unmarried and without legitimate issue in 1864. The title then passed to his third son, Hon Charles Howard, who also died unmarried and without legitimate issue. Consequently, the earldom was inherited by George James Howard, the grandson of the fifth son of the 6th Earl, and his descendants continue to hold the titles.
