Introduction

Anne Elizabeth Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville, Duchess of Buckingham and Chandos, Lady Kinloss, was born on 27 October 1779. Her birth name was Anna Eliza Brydges. She was the only child of James Brydges, the 3rd Duke of Chandos, and Anne Eliza Elletson (née Gamon).

Her parents planned her marriage from an early age; by the time she was six years old, they had arranged for her to marry the future 1st Duke of Buckingham and Chandos. The intended betrothal was arranged as a marriage alliance, but by the age of 14, she and her fiancé were in contact with a mutual interest in becoming partners.

Her mother's first marriage was to Roger Hope Elletson (1723–1775), Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica. She married Elletson in 1775, and he died the same year. As a result, her mother inherited the Hope Plantation in Saint Andrew Parish, Jamaica. After her second marriage, her mother actively managed the plantation and the enslaved people on the estate, despite her physical absence from Jamaica. In 1791, her mother was declared a lunatic.

In 1796, Anna Eliza married Richard Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville, who became the 1st Duke of Buckingham and Chandos. Her marriage settlement included provisions that her husband was not to dispose of certain lands. Despite this, her husband engaged in financial mismanagement, including disposing of land holdings. She took steps to reorganize their finances and is credited with rescuing the family from potential bankruptcy.

Her husband was a spendthrift; although he managed to retain some of the family estates, their economic situation deteriorated over time. Their son, Richard, later inherited financial difficulties that ultimately led to the family declaring bankruptcy in 1847.

Anne Elizabeth Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville, Duchess of Buckingham, died on 15 May 1836 in Stowe, Buckinghamshire. She was either 56 or 57 years old at the time of her death.
