Introduction
Gilbert Holles, 3rd Earl of Clare, was born on 24 April 1633 and died on 16 January 1689. He was an English nobleman and politician who served briefly in the House of Commons. His childhood titles included Lord Haughton from 1637 until he inherited the earldom in 1666.
Holles was the son of John Holles, 2nd Earl of Clare, and Elizabeth Vere, who was the daughter of Horace Vere, 1st Baron Vere of Tilbury. He was baptized at the Church of St John-at-Hackney on 18 May 1633. His grandfathers were John Holles, 1st Earl of Clare, and Horatio Vere, Baron Vere; his godmother was Mary Courteen, Countess of Kent. In 1645, he traveled abroad.
In April 1660, Holles was elected as a Member of Parliament for Nottinghamshire in the Convention Parliament. He held this parliamentary seat during that year and later succeeded to the family titles in 1666, becoming the 3rd Earl of Clare.
Holles married Grace Pierrepont on 9 July 1655 at St Giles in the Fields Church in London. Grace was the daughter of Hon. William Pierrepont and Elizabeth Harris. The couple had seven children:
- Lady Grace Holles (1656–1700), who married Thomas Pelham, 1st Baron Pelham of Laughton, on 21 May 1686.
- Lady Elizabeth Holles (1658–1725), who married Christopher Vane, 1st Baron Barnard, in 1676.
- John Holles, who became the 1st Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (1662–1711).
- Lady Mary Holles (1664–1715), with no marriage details specified.
- Hon. William Holles (1666–1680), who died young.
- Hon. Denzell Holles (1668–1680), who also died young.
- Lady Ann Holles, born in 1674, with no further details provided.
Gilbert Holles died in 1689 and was buried at Haughton. His coat of arms and additional references are noted but not detailed in the provided information.
