Introduction
Na Ying, born November 27, 1963, is originally from Shenhe District, Shenyang, Liaoning Province. Her father, Na Hongsheng, was a medical specialist and the family has a background in traditional Chinese medicine. Her sister, Na Xin, served as her manager. From an early age she showed a strong interest in music; in 1979 she joined the Liaoning Children's Broadcasting Choir as a child lead singer. In 1983, after several exams, she was admitted to the Shenyang Song and Dance Troupe and began formal vocal training.
After joining the Shenyang Song and Dance Troupe, Na Ying often performed as a backing vocalist in the choir and stepped forward as lead vocalist when performers were absent. She began learning and performing songs by Su Rui on stage, gradually accumulating stage experience. In 1988 she took part in the “Sunshine Cup” Youth Singer Competition, winning the pop-song group gold prize for her performance of Su Rui’s “I Found Myself” (我找到自己), which brought her wide attention.
She was later noticed by composer Gu Jianfen and became a student at Gu Jianfen’s vocal training center. She moved from Shenyang to Beijing and formally entered the entertainment industry. While in Beijing, in addition to professional training, she recorded demo tracks for singers such as Mao Amin, briefly used the stage name “Su Bing” (苏丙), and covered many of Su Rui’s songs. During this period she participated in numerous concerts and singing contests, and in 2010 she received Hong Kong’s Top Ten Gold Songs award and the National Top Ten Most Popular Singer award.
In the 1990s Na Ying gradually rose to fame, appearing year after year on CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala, repeatedly winning the National Top Ten Most Popular Singer award, and releasing personal albums in Taiwan that earned multiple music honors. Her representative works include “When the Mountains Don’t Move, the Water Will” (山不转水转), “Daytime Doesn’t Know the Darkness of Night” (白天不懂夜的黑), and “Viewing Flowers in the Fog” (雾里看花); many of her songs received Golden Melody and chart awards.
Her performing career spans decades; she has been with multiple record companies, released numerous albums, and worked in film and variety programs. She has served several times as a coach on Hunan TV’s music talent show The Voice of China and has received many domestic and international music awards and industry recognitions. Her music covers a variety of styles—from ballads to rock—and demonstrates both vocal technique and deep singing foundations, underscoring her important position in the Chinese-language music scene.
In her personal life, Na Ying once dated footballer Gao Feng and they have a son. She later legally married Meng Tong, a Canadian national, and they have a daughter. She is active in charity work, frequently participating in benefit performances and raising funds and donations for impoverished areas and disaster zones, earning widespread social recognition and respect.
With a rich catalogue of music, solid vocal skills, and diverse stage presence, Na Ying has become one of the representative singers of the Chinese-language pop music world.
