Introduction
Yan Bifang, birth date unknown, died in July 1930. She served as the Minister for Women in the Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, responsible for the committee’s women’s work, and she was married to Zhang Guoshu, who held the post of secretary of the Jiangxi Provincial Committee at that time. Zhang Guoshu is also described as the younger brother of the CCP’s senior leader Zhang Guotao.
In May 1930, due to betrayal by a traitor, Yan Bifang and Zhang Guoshu were arrested in Nanchang. They were interrogated by Zhang Huizan, commander of the Kuomintang’s Nanchang Garrison Command. Upon learning Zhang Guoshu’s identity and his connections, the interrogator sought to obtain confidential information. The couple refused to disclose any information or to surrender. After the interrogation, Zhang Huizan ordered their execution.
On July 5, 1930, Yan Bifang and Zhang Guoshu were killed; their bodies were placed in burlap sacks and dumped into the Gan River (the Gan River, a river flowing through the area around Nanchang, Jiangxi Province). Their story and background were regarded at the time as part of political events.
On November 20, 1986, with the approval of the Jiangxi Provincial People’s Government, Zhang Guoshu and Yan Bifang were posthumously recognized as revolutionary martyrs. This posthumous recognition was confirmed by an official government announcement of their sacrifices and their identities and contributions to the revolutionary cause.
As part of their family relationship, Yan Bifang and Zhang Guoshu were married; Zhang Guoshu served as the Jiangxi Provincial Committee Secretary in the political framework of that era and is described as the younger brother of the CCP senior leader Zhang Guotao. The above information is based on public records and does not mention any other personal experiences, educational background, or other family members of Yan Bifang.
