Introduction
Prince Zhao Zhu Qi was born in October 1369. He was an illegitimate son of Ming Taizu Zhu Yuanzhang. His early life and when he became a monk are unclear. Historical records from the Xuande reign during the Ming dynasty indicate that he was the first and only Prince Zhao of the Ming dynasty. Zhu Qi was born in September of the second year of Hongwu (October 1369). In April of the following year, he was bestowed the title Prince Zhao, but he never reached his fiefdom. He died in December of the third year of Hongwu (1370), which corresponds to January 16, 1371, and he was not posthumously awarded a temple name.
