Introduction

Edward Baldwin Courtenay, 12th Earl of Devon, was born on 7 May 1836. He was the son of William Courtenay, 11th Earl of Devon, and Elizabeth Fortescue, daughter of Hugh Fortescue, 1st Earl Fortescue. His early education took place at Westminster School, after which he attended Christ Church, Oxford.

Courtenay served as a Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party. His parliamentary career included representing Exeter from 1864 until 1868. Subsequently, he represented Devon East from 1868 until 1870, when he resigned and was succeeded by John Kennaway. During his time in Parliament, he was noted for his advocacy of women's rights and was a member of the Albemarle Club, an organization known for its inclusiveness of both male and female members.

In 1888, Courtenay inherited the title of Earl of Devon from his father, William Courtenay, upon his death. As the 12th Earl, he entered the House of Lords. Following his succession, he became a governor of the London Charterhouse and served as a Deputy Lieutenant for Devonshire.

Edward Courtenay died unmarried on 15 January 1891 at the age of 54. His death occurred in Trafalgar Square after he called a cab back to his residence while walking. He became unconscious and passed away shortly after arriving at his home, with the cause attributed to apoplexy. His funeral was held on 21 January 1891. His body was placed in three coffins—elm, lead, and oak—with the outermost coffin adorned with brass fittings and a commemorative plaque. He was interred at a church near Powderham Castle, in the family burial site alongside his ancestors.

Upon his death, the earldom was succeeded by his uncle, Hugh Courtenay.
