Introduction

Hugh Archibald Wyndham, the 4th Baron Leconfield, was born on October 4, 1877, at Petworth House, Sussex. He was a member of the British peerage, a politician, and an author. Wyndham was a direct descendant of Sir John Wyndham, and his family had inherited considerable wealth from his grandfather, George Wyndham, the 1st Baron Leconfield, who was the eldest illegitimate son of George Wyndham, the 3rd Earl of Egremont.

He was the son of Henry Wyndham, the 2nd Baron Leconfield, and Constance Evelyn Primrose, daughter of Archibald Primrose, Lord Dalmeny. Hugh Wyndham was the fourth son in his family but the third to survive infancy. His education included studies at Eton College and New College, Oxford.

In 1908, Wyndham married Maud Mary Lyttelton, daughter of Charles Lyttelton, the 8th Viscount Cobham. His wife died in 1953. In 1952, following the death of his elder brother, Wyndham succeeded as the 4th Baron Leconfield. Despite inheriting the family estate, Petworth House, he primarily resided in Wyndham House in London.

Wyndham inherited the peerage in 1952 and held the title for eleven years, passing away on July 6, 1963, at the London Clinic. He did not have any children, and upon his death, the barony was inherited by his younger brother, Edward Wyndham.

Throughout his life, Wyndham authored several works, often published under the title "The Hon. H. A. Wyndham." His publications include "Native Education: Ceylon, Java, Formosa, the Philippines, French Indo-China, and British Malaya" (1933), which discusses issues related to education in various Asian regions, and two works on Atlantic history and slavery—"The Atlantic and Slavery" (1935) and "The Atlantic and Emancipation" (1937). He also wrote family histories: "A Family History, 1410–1688: The Wyndhams of Norfolk and Somerset" (1939) and "A Family History, 1688–1837: The Wyndhams of Somerset, Sussex and Wiltshire" (1950). His later works include "Petworth Manor in the Seventeenth Century" (1954) and "Sutton And Duncton Manors" (1956), both published under his title as Lord Leconfield.
