Introduction
Grace Roosevelt McMillan, born Grace Green Roosevelt on August 17, 1911, in San Francisco, California, was the granddaughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States. She was the first child and only daughter of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. and Eleanor Butler Alexander. She had three younger brothers: Theodore Roosevelt III, Cornelius Van Schaack Roosevelt III, and Quentin Roosevelt II. McMillan died on February 15, 1994.
Her educational background includes studies at the Sorbonne in Paris. She pursued a career in photography as a freelance photographer and studied with photographer J. Ghislain Lootens, along with her mother.
On March 3, 1934, Grace Roosevelt married William McMillan, an architect. Together, they had two children: Eleanor McMillan and William McMillan Jr.
During World War II, McMillan managed the McMillan family farm located in Glyndon, Maryland, while her husband served in the United States Navy in the Pacific theater.
In 1986, she transferred a collection of photographs and albums to the Library of Congress. This collection included 25 albums belonging to her mother, Eleanor Roosevelt, as well as approximately 5,000 of her own photographs. The images feature various subjects, including photographs of U.S. presidents and international dignitaries.
She was also active in civic and cultural institutions, serving as a trustee of the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Greater Baltimore Medical Center.
