Introduction

Sir John Brookes, 1st Baronet, FRS (baptised 9 June 1636 – 18 November 1691), was an English Member of Parliament representing Boroughbridge. His baptism took place at St Martin's Church on Coney Street in York. He was the only son of James Brookes, a merchant based in York who served as Lord Mayor of York in 1651.

Brookes received his early education at York School and later studied at Gray's Inn in London. In 1652, he enrolled at Christ's College, Cambridge. In 1662, he was elected as an original fellow of the Royal Society, an organization focused on scientific achievement, but was expelled from the Society in 1685.

Professionally, Brookes served as a Justice of the Peace for York and subsequently for the North Riding of Yorkshire. On 13 June 1676, he was created a Baronet, a hereditary title.

In the political arena, Brookes was elected as a Member of Parliament for Boroughbridge in the years 1679 and 1681. During his time in Parliament, he was associated with the militant Country Party faction.

Brookes married Mary Waller, the daughter of Sir Hardress Waller of Kilfinny, County Limerick, and Elizabeth Dowdall. Sir Hardress Waller was known as a regicide. John Brookes and Mary Waller had a total of eleven children, comprising four sons and seven daughters.

He died in 1691 and was buried at St Martin's Church in Coney Street, York. His son, James Brookes, succeeded him as the 2nd Baronet.
