Introduction

Pu Jiexiu, born in Jiading District, Shanghai, her years of birth and death are unknown. She joined the Communist Party of China in 1991. In her early years, she received education in revolutionary thought and actively participated in the anti-Japanese salvation movement led by the Communist Party. During her youth, she devoted herself to women’s movements for democracy and freedom, actively organizing women from all walks of life in Chongqing to carry out a series of revolutionary activities opposing civil war, insisting on resistance, and advocating for democracy and women’s rights. She also organized progressive women’s forces in Beiping (now Beijing), participated in promoting revolutionary struggles, and contributed to the peaceful liberation of Beiping.

Between 1953 and 1966, Pu Jiexiu served successively as vice director of the Chemical Company of the Beijing Local Industry Bureau and as director of the Beijing Grain Bureau. She also has an outstanding record in women’s affairs, having served as deputy director of the Beijing Women’s Federation for the third, fourth, and fifth sessions. After the reform and opening-up, she continued to play an important role in politics and social affairs. From December 1979 to January 1993, she served as vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the Beijing Municipal People’s Congress for its seventh to ninth sessions.

She was a member of the China Democratic National Construction Association, joining the organization in 1947. Subsequently, Pu Jiexiu served multiple terms as deputy chairman and chairman of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Democratic National Construction Association. She also held positions as an executive member and vice chairman of the Central Committee of the Democratic National Construction Association, as well as vice chairman and chairman of its advisory committee. Additionally, she was vice chairman of the fifth Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and was a member of the second and third sessions of the National Committee of the CPPCC. She served as a delegate to the first through eighth National People’s Congresses consecutively.

Pu Jiexiu passed away in Beijing on January 13, 2000, at the age of 92. Throughout her life, she dedicated herself to politics, social affairs, and women’s rights, playing influential roles in many important positions. Her career spanned a period of major social and historical changes in China.
