Herbert Woodrow was born in Chillicothe, Ohio. His father, Thomas Woodrow, was an immigrant from England. His familial background includes Scotch Presbyterian ministers among his ancestors. He was a first cousin of Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States. President Wilson’s birth name was Thomas Woodrow Wilson, and he was named after Herbert Woodrow’s father.

**Education**

Woodrow completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan. Later, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from Columbia University.

**Career**

In 1919, Herbert Woodrow authored the book *Brightness and Dullness in Children*. A review published in The Journal of Education described the work as a significant contribution that emphasizes the distinction between "Dullness and Brightness in Children," recommending it for those interested in the scientific study of intelligence.

He served as the president of the American Psychological Association in 1941, becoming the fourth faculty member from the University of Minnesota to assume the APA presidency in the first half of the twentieth century. Additionally, he was president of the Midwestern Psychological Association in 1932.

**Legacy**

The University of Illinois awards the Herbert Woodrow Fellowship to graduate students in psychology who demonstrate excellence in basic scientific research.
