Introduction

Deheng (1895–1934), courtesy name Jianting, was of Manchu ethnicity, from the Nala clan of the Heihuang Banner. He was the son of Gui Xiang, the third-rank earl, nephew of Empress Dowager Cixi, younger brother of Empress Dowager Longyu, and a maternal relative of Emperor Tongzhi and Emperor Guangxu, making him part of the Qing dynasty's external relatives. Much of his biography and family background are recorded in historical texts. Deheng was the eldest son of Gui Xiang, the third-rank Earl of Cheng'en. According to the "Draft History of Qing" (Qingshi Gao), volume 167, table 7, he died in 1934.
