Introduction
James Annesley, 3rd Earl of Anglesey, was born on July 3, 1674. He became the Earl of Anglesey in 1690 after the death of his father, James Annesley, 2nd Earl of Anglesey. In the same year, he matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford. His mother was Lady Elizabeth Manners, the daughter of John Manners, 8th Earl of Rutland.
In October 1699, James Annesley married Lady Catherine Darnley, who was an illegitimate daughter of James II of England and Catherine Sedley, Countess of Dorchester. The couple had one daughter, Lady Catherine Annesley. Lady Catherine Annesley married William Phipps and was an ancestor of the Baron Mulgrave.
The marriage between James Annesley and Lady Catherine Darnley was legally dissolved in June 1701, on the grounds of Anglesey’s cruelty to his wife. At the time, James Annesley was suffering from consumption. He died on January 21, 1702.
