Introduction
Ion Trant Hamilton, 1st Baron HolmPatrick (14 July 1839 – 6 March 1898), was an Anglo-Irish politician who served as a Member of Parliament and held various public offices in Ireland. He was born in Ireland to James Hans Hamilton and Caroline Trant, and was the grandson of Hans Hamilton. Hamilton received his education at Cambridge University.
He succeeded his father and grandfather as the Member of Parliament for County Dublin in 1863, a position he maintained until 1885. In 1887, he was appointed to the Irish Privy Council. From 1892 until his death in 1898, he served as Lord Lieutenant of County Dublin.
In the 1897 Diamond Jubilee Honours, Hamilton was elevated to the peerage as Baron HolmPatrick, of HolmPatrick, in the County of Dublin. His peerage was part of the honors conferred during the celebration of Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee.
On 6 September 1877, Hamilton married Lady Victoria Alexandrina Wellesley at St. George's Church in Hanover Square. Lady Wellesley was the daughter of Major-General Lord Charles Wellesley, granddaughter of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, and was a goddaughter of Queen Victoria.
He resided at Abbotstown House in Castleknock. Hamilton died unexpectedly at his home on 6 March 1898, aged 58. His death was noted in The Times, which described him as a "staunch Conservative" known for his tolerance of differing opinions. The obituary highlighted his practical speaking style, his respect among social classes, and his active participation in charitable efforts, emphasizing that he contributed financially without regard to party or creed.
He and Lady HolmPatrick had a total of six children: five daughters and one son, Hans Wellesley Hamilton, who succeeded him as the 2nd Baron HolmPatrick. Lady HolmPatrick died on 31 July 1933.
