**Early Life**
George Cabot Lee Jr. was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on February 2, 1871. His parents were George Cabot Lee (1830–1910), a Boston banker, and Caroline Watts (née Haskell) Lee (1835–1914). His paternal grandparents were John Clarke Lee, a member of the Cabot family, and Harriet Paine (née Rose) Lee. His maternal grandparents were Elisha Haskell and Alice Russell (née Hathaway) Haskell. Lee had siblings including Rose Lee, Alice Hathaway Lee, who was the first wife of President Theodore Roosevelt, and Harriet Paine Lee, who married Charles Mifflin Hammond, involved in William Howard Taft's campaign in California. Through his sister Alice, Lee was the uncle of Alice Roosevelt Longworth.
**Education**
Lee graduated from Harvard University in 1894 and served as the treasurer of his graduating class for thirty-one years.
**Career**
On September 1, 1900, Lee joined the firm of Lee, Higginson & Co., founded by his grandfather in 1848, and was admitted as a junior partner. He later served as president of the Lee, Higginson Safe Deposit Company. When the firm dissolved, he managed its affairs and settled its operations.
Lee held director positions at various companies including the Revere Sugar Refinery, the Massachusetts Fire and Marine Insurance Company, the United Fruit Company, the U.S. Smelting and Refining Company, and the Ponce and Guayama Railroad. He also served as a trustee for the Central Aguirre Sugar Company, which operated the Central Aguirre refinery in Guayama.
**Philanthropic Activities**
During World War I, Lee was involved in fundraising efforts for the Allies, the Red Cross, the YMCA, and other organizations such as the Knights of Columbus. His contributions earned him the Order of St. Sava from Serbia. He served as treasurer of the Boston Floating Hospital, was a trustee of the YMCA Boston, served as a director of the Free Hospital for Women, and was a fundraiser for the YWCA.
**Personal Life**
On November 17, 1898, Lee married Madeline Jackson (1878–1920), daughter of James Jackson and Rebecca Nelson (née Borland) Jackson. They had three sons: George Cabot Lee III (1899–1970), who married Kathleen Bowring Stoddart in 1928; James Jackson Lee (1900–1972), who married Emily Schniewind in 1926; and Nelson Borland Lee (1906–1967), who married Mary Flagg.
Following the death of his first wife, Lee remarried in Paris in July 1926 to Gertrude Wylde (née Cramer) Bartlett (1878–1971), the former wife of Edwin Bartlett.
**Death**
George Cabot Lee Jr. died on October 28, 1950, at his residence in Westwood, Massachusetts. He was buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
