Luo Meiwei, born on September 1, 1965, in Hong Kong, China. Her family background includes her parents' divorce, and she lived with her mother-in-law from a young age.
Early in her career, at age 17 Luo applied to work as a telephone operator for New Art City (Neway Cinema). She was discovered by the company's boss and well-known director Raymond Wong Pak-ming and officially became one of his artists. She entered the entertainment industry in 1985, making her first appearance in the comedy film Happy Ghost Goes on Summer Vacation, which marked her entry into show business.
From 1985 to 1989, Luo Meiwei acted in numerous films, taking on a variety of roles. She formed the “Happy Girls Group” with Luo Mingzhu, Anita Yuen (Yuan Jieying), Loletta Lee (Li Lizhen), Chan Ka-ling, and Bo Anni. Some representative works include Cai Ai in Eight Happinesses Arrive at the Door (1986), Luo Meimei in Twin Dragons Spit Pearls (1986), Joey in Brave Flying Tigers: The Rose Warriors (1989), and A-mei in The Lonely Swan in the Sea of People (1989).
In the 1990s she gradually shifted toward behind-the-scenes work while continuing to appear in films. Notable appearances include Rebattle Jianghu and Midnight Angel (1990), The Twelve Shocking Hours, Dai Zi Hong Lang, and Dancing with the Dragon (1991). In 1992 her starring role in Modern Call Girl earned her a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the 29th Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan. After playing a girlfriend role in the 1993 film Daughter, She Must Rely on Herself, she gradually withdrew from the entertainment industry.
On her personal life, Luo Meiwei had a relationship with Jacky Cheung (Zhang Xueyou). They met in 1985 while filming My Foolish Heart and started a relationship that later experienced ups and downs. They broke up in March 1988 over relationship issues, but Jacky resumed pursuing her by the end of that year. The couple announced their reconciliation in 1991. They secretly registered their marriage in London on February 15, 1996. Their first daughter, Zhang Yaohua, was born in 2000, and their second daughter, Zhang Yaoxuan, was born in 2005.
In 2002 media reports claimed Luo suffered from obsessive cleanliness, a fact Jacky Cheung reportedly confirmed on a recorded program. Luo was sworn sisters with Anita Mui; their close friendship lasted until Anita Mui’s death.
Luo Meiwei’s acting career is known for its variety of film roles and her early prominence in the Hong Kong entertainment scene. Her Golden Horse Award nomination reflects recognition of her acting.
