Introduction

Security Guard Crown Prince Zhu Shangyu, the first King of Bao'an in the Ming Dynasty's Qin-boundaries, was born on November 20, 1385, and died on February 25, 1410. His father was Zhu Shuang, King Min of Qin, and his mother was Dowager Concubine Deng, the granddaughter of Deng Yu, making him a grandson of Zhu Yuanzhang. He was born in the eighteenth year of Hongwu (1385). In the twenty-second year of Hongwu (1389), he was summoned to Nanjing and received education in the palace. In the first year of Yongle (1403), he was granted the title of King of Bao'an and in September was escorted by an imperial censor eunuch to Lintao Prefecture in Shaanxi. On the way through Xi'an, he requested to stay as a gesture of kinship. His residence was established in Chang'an County. In the fourth year of Yongle (1406), in April, he went to Nanjing to pay homage to Emperor Ming Chengzu and then returned. He passed away on January 22, in the eighth year of Yongle (1410), at the age of 26, with the posthumous title of Huai Xi. His eldest surviving son, Zhu Zhitong, inherited the title eleven years later. His wife was Lady Chen, granddaughter of Chen Xian, a chief clerk of Raozhou, who was made Princess Consort of Bao'an in the first year of Yongle (1403). His concubine was Lady Zhao, who was designated in the sixth year of Xuande (1431) as Princess Huai Xi of Bao'an and mother of Zhu Zhitong. Regarding children, the eldest son Zhu Zhitong was titled King of Bao'an Dao Shun; among his daughters, the eldest was Lady of Lantian County, married to Scholar Xu Rong; the second was Lady of Lu County, married to Scholar Li Xian.
