Introduction
The Reverend Honorable Francis Sylvester Grimston was born on 8 December 1822 at Gorhambury, Hertfordshire. He was the sixth and youngest son of James Grimston, 1st Earl of Verulam. Grimston’s family included several individuals who participated in cricket at the first-class level; his brothers James, Edward, and Robert Grimston, as well as his nephews Walter Grimston and Lord Hyde, all played first-class cricket.
Grimston received his early education at Harrow School. He subsequently attended Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he was a member of the University Pitt Club.
In terms of sporting activity, Grimston was associated primarily with Cambridge University and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). His cricket career spanned from 1843 to 1851, during which he made at least 18 first-class appearances. He played in the position of wicket-keeper.
Following his involvement in cricket, Grimston pursued a career in the clergy. He served as the vicar of Wakes Colne in Essex from 1846 until his death in 1865.
Francis Sylvester Grimston died on 28 October 1865 at Wakes Colne, Essex.
