Zhang Sheng, a native of Daxian, Sichuan Province, is the son of renowned Chinese general Zhang Aiping. He served for many years in the People’s Liberation Army’s General Staff Department, holding key leadership positions.

Zhang Sheng enlisted in the military in 1964, beginning his career in the armed forces. During the 1980s, he served as Director of the Campaign Bureau of the Operations Department of the General Staff Department. He later became Deputy Director of the Operations Department while concurrently serving as Director of the Campaign Bureau, as well as Director of the Strategic Research Office. These roles reflected his deep expertise in operational planning and strategic studies, as well as his senior standing within the military.

In 1994, Zhang Sheng retired from active service, concluding several decades of military work. Following his retirement, he focused on documenting his military experiences and his family’s legacy of service, authoring the book *From War We Come: A Dialogue Between Two Generations of Soldiers*. The work reflects both his own experiences and the enduring influence of his father, Zhang Aiping.

As the son of a prominent general, Zhang Sheng not only carried forward his family’s military tradition but also contributed through his own service and writings to the study of military history and to a broader public understanding of the development of China’s armed forces.
