Introduction
Lady Augusta Fane was born on 18 September 1761 at Brympton House near Yeovil. She was the daughter of John Fane, 9th Earl of Westmorland, who was born on 5 May 1728 and died on 25 April 1774, and Augusta Bertie. Her brother was John Fane, who became the 10th Earl of Westmorland.
She married William Lowther, who was created the 1st Earl of Lonsdale and was born on 29 December 1757. William Lowther was a Knight of the Garter (KG) and died on 19 March 1844. Through this marriage, she acquired the title of Countess of Lonsdale.
The couple resided in Westmorland at Lowther Castle. Among their visitors was the poet Robert Southey.
A portrait of Lady Augusta Fane, dated 1837, is held by the National Portrait Gallery in London. The portrait has been attributed as "after" Sir Thomas Lawrence.
