Introduction

Yonggan (Manchu: ᠶᡠᠩᡤᠠᠨ, transcribed: yunggan; January 23, 1661 – January 15, 1668), was the eighth son of the Shunzhi Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. Regarding his birth date, historical records are inconsistent: one states it was December 23, 1660 (corresponding roughly to December 23, 1660, Gregorian calendar), and another indicates January 23, 1661, Gregorian calendar. Yonggan’s mother was Mu Kutusi, daughter of Semkenene Fujin Mu Kutusi, and also the daughter of Woka, a Yunqiwei. She held the status of an concubine.

As a son born from a concubine, Yonggan was later in the line of imperial sons. The historical materials do not record him receiving a noble title or participating in significant court rituals, nor do they mention his education or upbringing.

Yonggan died on the second day of the twelfth month of the sixth year of the Kangxi Emperor’s reign (December 1667 or January 1668), at only eight years old. The cause of death is not clearly documented in publicly available historical sources, and he was not posthumously titled. Different versions exist regarding the exact date of his death, leading to discrepancies in the corresponding Gregorian calendar date. His early death was a rare occurrence among members of the Qing imperial family and did not produce clear records regarding succession arrangements afterward.

The above biographical information mainly derives from records such as the "Four Records of the Qing Imperial Family" and other similar texts. Other chronicle histories often briefly mention the death of concubine-born imperial sons but do not provide detailed biographies or additional information about their lives.

The verifiability of this biographical data is limited by the extant sources. There are no definitive independent records regarding Yonggan’s education, official positions, military involvement, or court activities. Based on current information, the main details known about Yonggan focus on his identity as a son of a concubine and his early death, with no records of his participation in military, political, or other official duties.
